YouTuber shows 3D printing of injection molds for filament waste

3D printing offers numerous innovative applications, including the production of custom injection molds. This technology makes it possible to create individual and cost-effective molds for the production of smaller plastic parts. The YouTube channel “3D Luke” recently published a video showing how to make and use your own injection mold with a 3D printer.

In the video, “3D Luke” explains in detail the process of making a mold from PCTG. This material is known for its high impact strength and resistance to chemicals. It is therefore particularly suitable for injection molds. After the mold is printed, the YouTuber took 6 grams of PLA filament waste from previous printing processes. These were then melted on a silicone mat in an oven at 210 °C. As soon as the material is liquid, it can be safely transferred to the previously 3D-printed mold using tweezers.

Once the melted PLA has been placed in the mold, the mold is pressed together and cooled. After a short time, the mold can be opened and the finished plastic part can be removed. The end result is impressive: A colorful, evenly shaped object made from recycled filament – without any complex equipment or expensive tools. “This method simplifies the production of individual small series enormously and makes it affordable for everyone,” says Bachmann.

Although the home process is unsuitable for larger production quantities, it offers a fascinating new possibility for prototypes, craft projects or design objects. “With more powerful 3D printers, even more complicated molds could be printed for more demanding applications,” explains the YouTuber.
