Warwickshire NHS Trust uses first 3D-printed wrist implant

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust has performed the first wrist surgery to use a patient-specific implant created using 3D printing technology.

The creation of 3D printed patient-specific implants begins with a clinical assessment of the patient and identification of their specific needs. Imaging techniques such as X-rays and CT scans are used to collect detailed data, which is then converted into a digital 3D model using advanced software. This model is sent to a 3D printer where strict quality control measures ensure that the implant is manufactured accurately.

Orthopaedic Surgery Consultant, Fiaz Hashmi at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, said: “By adopting advanced 3D printing technology, we have been able to demonstrate our commitment to using innovative methods for patient care. This advancement not only enhances surgical precision and patient outcomes but also strengthens the hospital’s reputation as a leader in use of medical innovation.”

The implant used was designed specifically for the patient to ensure an optimal fit and functionality. 3D printing made it possible to accurately replicate complex structures and details that would be difficult to achieve with traditional manufacturing methods. The precise manufacturing process ensured that the implant met the highest standards, resulting in a successful operation and a speedy recovery for the patient.

By using 3D printing technology in orthopaedics, South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is demonstrating how modern technology can revolutionize medical care. The success of this intervention highlights the potential of 3D printing to provide patient-specific solutions tailored to individual patient needs. This marks an important step in the development of personalized medicine and underlines the Trust’s role as an innovative player in the healthcare sector.
