Tencent’s AI app turns selfies into 3D-printed avatars

According to media reports, Tencent has introduced a new function called “3D Avatar Dream Factory” with its “Yuanbao” app. This enables users to create personalised 3D characters from a single frontal photo. According to the manufacturer, the application, which is based on a large AI model, is the first of its kind to offer such high-quality 3D generation for the mass market.

Users can quickly customise their avatars by choosing from various templates. The option to materialise the created characters using 3D printing is particularly interesting.

Technically, Tencent Yuanbao relies on processes such as 3D head replacement, geometric modelling and PBR material texture mapping. This ensures realistic and detailed character models. The software optimises head models and textures, refines geometric precision and improves material textures for a lifelike appearance.

The function currently offers 10 different character styles. Tencent plans to expand the range in future updates and add new options. The generated models can be viewed in a full 360-degree view. They can be shared, modified and even produced offline using 3D printing.
