Start-up Verne presents SLS printer STORM for high-performance plastics such as PEKK

The start-up Verne Additive Manufacturing Labs is currently developing an SLS printing system called STROM. The aim is to enable the processing of challenging polymers such as PEKK and make the technology accessible to a wider range of users.

The 3D printer is still in the development phase. According to Verne, the team is currently working on software, firmware and machine design. Prototype tests are planned for autumn 2024, with series production set to start in June 2025.

Despite the early stage, Verne has already published some technical details. The printer will have an installation space of 220 x 250 x 400 mm. Its build chamber can be heated up to 380°C, which is sufficient for processing PEKK powders. The equipment includes a 40W CO2 laser or optionally a fibre laser, IR cameras for temperature control and AI-supported processes for scanning and laser control.

A key feature of the STROM system is the combination of high-performance material processing and user-friendliness. PEKK is used as a metal substitute in industries such as aerospace, medical technology and the automotive industry. The system will also be able to process common SLS materials such as PA12, PA11, PP, TPU and PA6.

Verne is planning the STROM printer as part of a complete system. This includes the SM-1 automatic powder preparation system for sieving and mixing as well as solutions from Spengler for depowdering and surface treatment.

The development team led by Alessandro Facchini, Luca Veneri and Stefano Rebecchi has extensive experience. They are also involved in companies such as Spengler and Voxelsint and founded Norge Systems, known for the Ice 9 SLS printer, in 2014.
