South Korean food giant relies on 3D bioprinting

South Korean company CJ CheilJedang is partnering with bioprinting specialist T&R Biofab. Together, they aim to revolutionize plant-based meat alternatives with 3D printing technologies.

CJ CheilJedang is one of South Korea’s largest food producers. To tap into new growth opportunities, the company says it is focusing on product innovation and new technologies. That’s where 3D printing comes in.

The agreement with T&R Biofab is designed to drive the development of plant-based meat substitutes. The focus is on taste, texture and nutritional value – where there is still room for improvement in veggie products.

T&R Biofab is considered a pioneer in 3D bioprinting technology. The company already has expertise in the production of artificial organs and human tissue. It now plans to transfer these capabilities to food.

According to the companies, the combination of food production and 3D printing opens up a whole new approach to meat alternatives. The integration of cutting-edge bioprinting technologies is a major step forward for the industry, they said.

CJ CheilJedang is also pushing the development of meat alternatives away from the cooperation. It already sells plant-based products under its own “PlanTable” brand. As early as 2021, there was a partnership with Aleph Farms to market cultured meat.
