Software for testing: Orbex announces new collaboration with Altair

Orbex has announced at this year’s Farnborough Air Show the appointment of a new supplier, Altair, a world leader in computational intelligence, as it moves forward with the introduction of orbital launch services in the UK.

Altair, based in Troy, Michigan, uses computational science to drive innovation and intelligent decision-making in organizations. The aim is to develop more efficient and sustainable products. The announcement of this collaboration was made at the Farnborough International Airshow, a major trade show for the aerospace industry. This event provides a platform for innovative technologies, collaboration and business development.

Dr. Pietro Cervellera, Senior Vice President Aerospace and Defense at Altair, said: “We are proud to collaborate with Orbex and support its drive for small satellite development and launches. Access to space was once the domain of a few government organizations, innovative teams like Orbex are rapidly changing this paradigm. By utilizing Altair’s world-class design and AI-powered simulation technologies for their new product development programs, we can’t wait to see what Orbex will achieve in the near future.”

Orbex is currently building the Sutherland Spaceport, from which small satellites will be launched into low Earth orbit. The Orbex Prime microcarrier will play a central role in this. Ahead of the first launch, Orbex is working to secure new agreements with suppliers to support the company along the way.

Phil Chambers, CEO at Orbex, added: “With a strong focus on quality and sustainability, suppliers are a critical part of our journey to launch and each agreement – such as this one with Altair takes us one step closer to delivering orbital launch services from the UK. This software will allow the team to analyze launch vehicle components prior to the manufacturing process ensuring the efficiency of results and the streamlining of product production.”

The collaboration between Orbex and Altair underlines the importance of cutting-edge simulation and manufacturing technologies in the space sector. By combining their respective expertise, both companies aim to make the development and launch of small satellites more efficient and sustainable. This represents an important step in the further development of the UK space industry and demonstrates the potential of new technologies in the space sector.
