New materials for aerospace promoted by AFRL project

3D printing has become a key technology in the aerospace and defense sector in recent years. Now, the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), in partnership with America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, has announced the winners of the million project to develop powder alloys for the additive manufacturing process. This project is funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and aims to advance the use of new metal materials in 3D printing.

Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, offers numerous benefits to U.S. industry, particularly by shortening lead times and reducing part weight. This technology is of particular interest in the aerospace sector, as it offers significant benefits for both new projects and the maintenance of existing systems. As this sector grows, the need to establish data-based qualifications and performance standards becomes clear.

“We are embarking on an incredibly exciting era across the AM sector. Exploring the possibilities of AM material applications is a step in the right direction with considerable implications for the future of aerospace and defense,” states Brandon Ribic, Technology Director at America Makes. “The Institute is incredibly fortunate to have the support of the Under Secretary of Defense and AFRL and the engagement of the brightest minds in the country who will be collaborating to revolutionize this technology.”

The project winners were selected to establish repeatable and reproducible operations in metal 3D printing, with a focus on skills for operations, products and installations. Award-winning projects include the development of high-temperature refractory alloys, led by Castheon, and accelerating the maturation of nickel superalloys, led by Boeing.

The project teams will regularly present their progress at technical reviews and industry events. This initiative marks a significant step in the advancement of 3D printing and materials science, with far-reaching implications for the aerospace industry.
