Krones optimises spare parts production with 3D printing technology from UltiMaker

The machine manufacturer Krones AG has significantly increased its efficiency in spare parts production by using 3D printers. The company, known for its systems in the food and beverage industry, utilises the 3D printing ecosystems from Dutch manufacturer UltiMaker.

Krones now operates a fleet of almost 50 UltiMaker 3D printers at over 10 locations worldwide. These are primarily used for the rapid production of spare parts and prototypes. Bernd Baldauf, Head of Global eBusiness – Global Digital Content Management – Global 3D Customer Solutions at Krones, explains: ‘Our aim is to get closer to our customers and become their solution partner. With the innovative solutions from UltiMaker, we are well on the way to achieving this.’

The integration of 3D printers has fundamentally changed the production processes at Krones. While traditional contract manufacturing of prototypes often took weeks, they can now be produced within a few hours. This speeds up design iterations and improves the performance and durability of the parts. In addition, 3D-printed components are often cheaper, lighter and customisable in different materials. This is a decisive advantage for specific requirements such as flexibility or ESD safety.

A particular focus is on the on-demand service for spare parts. Krones customers can order the parts they need via the Krones.shop, which are then produced locally using UltiMaker printers. This system reduces delivery times from weeks to days or even hours and minimises production downtime and the need for large stocks of spare parts.

With the introduction of the UltiMaker Factor 4 printer, Krones has further expanded its capabilities. Johannes Karl, Head of Customer 3D Solutions at Krones, emphasises: ‘The Factor 4 has taken our capabilities to a new level. With support for stronger and more durable materials, we can produce parts that are not only more robust, but also offer greater flexibility with softer materials.’

Quality assurance of 3D printed parts is a top priority for Krones. The company develops its own materials and print profiles for each part to meet Krones’ stringent quality standards. The integration of UltiMaker’s secure and versatile 3D printing ecosystem helps Krones ensure high quality standards and data protection.
