Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro Review – Getting started with 3D printing at 600mm/s

In 2024, Flashforge introduced the Adventurer 5M Pro, a successor to the popular Adventurer 4. This 3D printer features a fully enclosed CoreXY construction with numerous features, achieving print speeds of up to 600 mm/s. A perfect reason to take a closer look at this device.

The printer is delivered in a compact, well-secured package. Setting it up is incredibly simple, involving only the removal of the packaging, loosening four transport securing screws, and attaching the filament holder to the back of the device using two screws. Once the power cable is connected, the device is ready for use.

First Impression

The Adventurer 5M Pro comes with a fully enclosed CoreXY case, offering a build volume of 220 x 220 x 220 mm, making it suitable for a wide range of printing projects. The sleek black plastic housing features a plexiglass door at the front and a convenient plexiglass opening at the top for easy access to the extruder. The printer measures 380 x 400 x 453 mm, weighs 14.6 kg, and, despite its medium build volume, requires relatively little space. Compared to some competing models, the casing adds little to the overall volume. An external filament spool at the back of the printer contributes to a more compact design compared to the previous model. The printer is operated via a responsive touchscreen located on the upper right side, right next to the conveniently placed USB port.

Package Contents

The package includes a manual, some tools, a 400g roll of PLA filament, the filament holder, the power cable, and a USB stick. Additionally, there is a spare nozzle and adhesive for better adhesion on the print bed.

Specifications

The Adventurer 5M Pro offers a comprehensive list of features and extras. It has an automatic calibration system that activates upon startup, probing the platform at various points to determine the Z-axis offsets. A flexible, removable print plate makes it easier to remove finished prints.

An air filter minimizes unpleasant odors, while the interior lighting and an HD camera allow for monitoring the printing process. Noise reduction keeps operation below 50 dB. Other key features include a quick-change nozzle system, which enables quick transitions between different print projects, as well as automatic vibration compensation to reduce ghosting effects. The high printing speed of 600 mm/s and the maximum printing temperature of 280 degrees allow the use of various materials, including PLA, ABS, PETG, ASA, TPU, PLA-CF, and PETG-CF.

Setup and Testing

The Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro performs a self-test upon first startup, which takes about 10 minutes. This includes calibration and a vibration test, where the filament is fed through a guide tube from the rear spool, and a test cube is printed. The entire process runs smoothly, and the device is ready for use immediately afterward. Our first print uses the included high-speed PLA in “Burnt Titanium” color for the preloaded objects.

Filament Feed

The Adventurer 5M Pro is operated via an integrated touchscreen, offering an intuitive and pleasant user experience. Print jobs can be quickly started via the USB stick, and the device operates efficiently and swiftly during our tests. The low noise level during operation and the odor-reducing effect of the air filter, especially when printing with PLA, are positive aspects. The first prints are completed quickly and with impressive quality for this price range.

After successfully testing the basic functions, we activated the Wi-Fi directly on the device, installed the suggested firmware update, and set up the FlashForge software on a Mac. The Orca-Flashforge software replaces the previous FlashPrint 5 version and, together with the FlashMaker mobile app, is intended to offer an improved user experience. Integrating the printer into the network allows for convenient print job submission and camera usage.

Integrated Camera

Next, we used a non-branded PLA and prepared a file for an overhang test. After slicing, we sent the job via Wi-Fi to the printer. The connection and transmission worked flawlessly. Although the included slicer contains the essential functions and offers additional setting options in expert mode, it appears minimalistic and visually unappealing. The overhang test performed well with the standard settings.

Conclusion

The Flashforge Adventurer 5M Pro positions itself as a fast, user-friendly 3D printer with a comprehensive range of features at a fair price of around €489. With features like an integrated filter and a closed build chamber, the device is particularly attractive for hobbyists and educational institutions. Overall, the printer delivers solid performance and is a worthwhile option for those seeking a reliable, cost-effective 3D printer.
