FIT AG introduces Submerged Arc Additive Manufacturing (SAAM) for large-format metal components

FIT AG, known for its innovations in additive manufacturing, has developed a new technology called Submerged Arc Additive Manufacturing (SAAM) that could fundamentally change the production of large-format metal components. SAAM makes it possible to produce components weighing over 50 kilograms efficiently and cost-effectively, which is particularly important for industries such as mechanical engineering, aerospace and construction.

The process differs from conventional additive manufacturing methods in its ability to produce very large structures from metal without sacrificing efficiency or material quality. A key advantage of SAAM is that it significantly shortens production times and increases the availability of components, which is crucial in industrial manufacturing.

“Our customers are faced with the challenge of producing ever larger and more complex structures more efficiently. The factors of time and availability are also playing an increasingly important role. With SAAM, we offer a solution that not only saves costs, but also optimizes the quality of the components,” says Carl Fruth, CEO of FIT AG, explaining the motivation for the development and expansion of this additional metal process.

The SAAM technology is part of the “I AM Huge” research project, which was developed at the Parsberg-Lupburg Technology Campus under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. The aim of the project is to test and further develop the marketability of this technology in order to adapt it to the specific requirements of industry.

Interested parties can find out more about the technology and follow the development of the project on the FIT AG website. The official presentation of a functional prototype will take place on October 16, 2024. This event is aimed at a selected audience who will have the opportunity to experience the SAAM technology live and discuss its potential applications.
