Community upgrade ‘Python’ extends the functionality of the Bambu Lab AMS system

The 3D printing community has developed a remarkable upgrade for Bambu Lab’s Automatic Material System (AMS) with ‘Python’. This project aims to significantly extend the functionality and flexibility of the original AMS system.

Python utilises the internal components of the AMS but replaces the external housing with a new design. This allows for wider compatibility with various filament spools, including samples, cardboard and plastic spools with widths up to 80 mm and diameters up to 210 mm.

A key feature of Python is the use of self-centring double helical gears with a 135:2 gear ratio, which improve filament feeding and unloading. In addition, all spool slots can be used as external spools, which facilitates printing with abrasive materials.

As an option, Python offers a housing that provides space for desiccant and up to four Polymaker dryers. This is particularly useful for hygroscopic materials such as PETG.

The assembly of Python requires approximately 1.8kg of filament for the standard version and an additional 1kg for the optional housing. Voxel PLA, a partner in the project, offers prefabricated parts kits.

Users report improved reliability and flexibility compared to the original device. The ability to use almost any filament spool and print abrasive materials is particularly appreciated. However, RFID support is lost, which could be a disadvantage for users who mainly use Bambu Lab filaments.

For the future, the community is already planning a version for 3 kg spools, which would further expand the range of applications. Further information and a 3D model can be downloaded directly from Printables.
