Bambu Lab 3D printing technology in the restoration of the ghost train at Luna Park Melbourne

Luna Park Melbourne has successfully completed the first part of a major restoration of its iconic ghost train, one of the oldest dark rides still in operation in the world. The restoration was undertaken to mark the 90th anniversary of the ride and was led by Edward Felix and his creative team. At the heart of the project was the use of modern 3D printing technology, which enabled a precise and detailed renovation of the historic attraction.

The ghost train, built in 1934 by the Pretzel Amusement Ride Company, is a unique piece of theme park history and the last remaining ride of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. To preserve the charm of this heritage attraction while integrating modern technology, Luna Park turned to Felix.

“Revitalizing the Ghost Train was a rare opportunity to honour a historical treasure while injecting new life into it,” said Edward Felix. “We wanted to stay true to the ride’s roots while ensuring it remains an exciting experience for guests of all ages. Thanks to Bambu Lab’s 3D printing technology, we were able to achieve a level of detail and customisation that would have been unimaginable when the ride first opened.”

Every part of the restoration, from the decorative lighting elements to the intricate scenic details, was created using 3D printers. The use of this technology not only ensured that the nostalgic appearance of the ghost train was preserved, but also guaranteed modern efficiency and longevity of the new components.

“Using Bambu Lab 3D printers allowed us to create an entirely new set of experiences for the ride while ensuring all parts were easy to maintain and replace,” said Felix. “The printers worked tirelessly, producing everything from custom book spines in the new library scene to realistic candle holders and even structural elements hidden from view. We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Nathan, CEO of Luna Park Melbourne, expressed his excitement for the revamped Ghost Train, which now pays homage to the park’s resident ghost, the White Lady. “This renovation is more than just an update – it’s a celebration of Luna Park’s rich history and a commitment to keeping that history alive in a way that modern audiences can appreciate. We’re thrilled to have worked with Edward and his team on this project.”
