Automated 3D scanning technology: The solution for glossy, monochrome objects

Botspot 3D Scan GmbH has developed a new automated process that enables the photogrammetric capture of monochrome objects with shiny, smooth surfaces. This process addresses a long-standing problem in 3D scanning technology by reliably and accurately capturing even objects that have traditionally been considered “non-scannable”.

Photogrammetry is particularly popular with users because of its ability to capture not only the geometry of an object, but also its true color texture. Cameras are used to create up to 1,000 individual images of an object, which serve as the basis for the software. This software identifies and correlates distinctive image elements from different perspectives to create a three-dimensional model. A grid model is calculated from the resulting point cloud, which reproduces the surface of the object in detail and is textured in color.

The challenge with smooth, monochrome surfaces is that they do not provide the software with any distinctive features, making it difficult to recognize the structure. Traditional methods have attempted to solve this problem by manually processing the objects with matting sprays or color patterns, but this is time consuming, costly and can damage the object itself.

Botspot’s innovative process revolutionizes this process by providing an automated, time-saving and cost-efficient system. The core technology consists of a so-called “digital spray” that projects a pattern onto the object. This pattern is recognized by the software, enabling precise detection of the object structure. People scanners use 160 synchronized cameras, while object scanners use 7 to 9 cameras arranged in a semicircle in combination with a transparent turntable.

This process not only significantly reduces the time and cost per 3D asset, but also guarantees consistent and reproducible results. Botspot’s technology is designed to support a high throughput of 3D models, enabling the creation of up to 60,000 digital 3D assets per year.

With this advanced solution, Botspot is setting new standards in 3D scanning technology, providing an efficient way to capture even the most challenging objects.
