Actival develops innovative aligners with 3D-printed microchannels for improved oral health

The Swiss start-up Actival has developed a new technology in the field of tooth correction: ‘Active Aligners’. These aligners differ from conventional aligners by integrating 3D-printed microchannels that promote better oral hygiene. These channels, developed in collaboration with the Swiss research centre CSEM, improve saliva flow and release an antibacterial, fluorine-containing liquid that both protects tooth enamel and prevents bad breath.

“In contrast to conventional aligners, the microchannels ensure continuous saliva circulation. This is essential to prevent side effects such as plaque and tooth decay,” explains Nikola Kalentics, engineer at CSEM and CEO and founder of Actival.

In addition, the fluid released protects the teeth and improves patient comfort.

The development of these innovative dental splints was supported by CSEM’s ACCELERATE programme, which provides technological and financial assistance to young companies.

Cyrill Cattin, Group Leader at CSEM, explains: “One of the biggest technical challenges was to ensure that the channels remain open during 3D printing. Thanks to CSEM’s unique expertise, we were able to overcome this obstacle and create innovative and efficient aligners.”

“An aligner can correct the alignment of teeth by 0.2 millimetres within ten days,” explains Nikola Kalentics.

The ‘Active Aligners’ have already attracted the attention of experts and were a finalist for the prestigious BCN Innovation Award. This recognition could provide Actival with additional funding for commercialisation. The global market for transparent aligners is growing rapidly and Actival is aiming for a leading position with its technology. The market launch of the ‘Active Aligners’ is planned for the end of 2025 in Switzerland and the USA, with a later expansion to Europe and Asia.

Bahaa Roustom, VP Marketing and Business Development at CSEM, underlines the importance of the ACCELERATE programme: “Without the technical, financial and operational support of CSEM through Inno Grant, this idea would not have reached its technological maturity, nor would it have become commercially viable. The ACCELERATE programme eliminates many entrepreneurial risks by providing privileged access to CSEM’s expertise, network and resources. With high-quality management coaching, entrepreneurs can focus on their development while acquiring important skills. This programme gives them the confidence they need to succeed in their entrepreneurial adventure.”
