3D scanners make building in existing structures easier: New software solutions for the construction industry

The topic of ‘building in existing buildings’ is becoming increasingly important in the construction industry. As newly developed building land is becoming increasingly scarce, the focus is shifting to the conversion and extension of existing buildings. Added to this is the need to modernise buildings in terms of energy efficiency. However, one challenge here is that plans of older buildings are often incomplete or not available at all. This is where modern 3D scanners come into play, which are becoming increasingly powerful and provide detailed data. However, the software for processing the point clouds generated in this way must also be user-friendly and efficient for the user.

One promising approach comes from the morphcad software, which integrates seamlessly into the BricsCAD CAD environment. Morphcad makes it possible to map the entire workflow from raw data processing to the finished 3D model with just eleven commands. Point clouds are transferred into deformation-compliant models, which is particularly important for as-built modelling, as it takes real deviations in the building stock into account. In contrast to other tools, which often generate idealised representations, morphcad focuses on the most precise possible depiction of the actual conditions.

The modelling process begins with the ‘From View’ command, which guides the user through the individual steps of creating a deformed component. Further functions allow the user to edit the generated solids, for example by modifying the modelled part.
