3D printer Original Prusa MK4S UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification

The Czech 3D printer manufacturer Prusa Research has received UL 2904 GREENGUARD certification for its Original Prusa MK4S. This internationally recognised certification evaluates the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ultrafine particles (UFPs) during the printing process.

At high concentrations, VOCs can be harmful to health and cause symptoms such as headaches or dizziness. UFPs, tiny particles with a diameter of less than 0.1 μm, can penetrate deep into the lungs and potentially enter the bloodstream.

GREENGUARD certification is based on the UL 2904 standard, which was developed specifically for 3D printers and materials. Emissions are measured in extensive tests in controlled environments. The Original Prusa MK4S was tested with the filaments Prusament PLA and PETG and met all criteria.

The certification applies specifically to the combination of the MK4S with Prusament PLA and PETG. For other materials such as ABS or ASA, Prusa Research recommends additional safety measures, such as the use of a housing with a HEPA filter.

Prusa Research is planning to extend the certification to other printer models. The company expects similarly good results for the larger Prusa XL, as it uses the same materials and comparable extruder technology.
